How to Get & Use Invisible Item Frames in Minecraft (Java & Bedrock Commands)

How to get invisible item frames in Minecraft Java 1.16 to 1.21+ and what works on Bedrock Edition: the /give commands for each version, making placed frames invisible, and resource pack options.

In this guide
  1. 1. The Invisible Item Frame /give Command for Java Edition 1.20.5 to 1.21+
  2. 2. Legacy Java Syntax (Minecraft 1.16 through 1.20.4)
  3. 3. How to Turn Existing Placed Item Frames Invisible
  4. 4. Invisible Item Frames in Minecraft Bedrock Edition

1. The Invisible Item Frame /give Command for Java Edition 1.20.5 to 1.21+

In Minecraft 1.20.5 and 1.21+, Mojang restructured item data from legacy NBT tags to structured Item Components. To obtain an invisible item frame in modern Minecraft, use the minecraft:custom_data or entity_data component.

Paste this command into chat (you need operator permissions) or into a command block:

# Minecraft 1.20.5 / 1.21+ Modern Syntax:
/give @p item_frame[entity_data={id:"minecraft:item_frame",Invisible:1b}] 1

# For Invisible Glow Item Frames:
/give @p glow_item_frame[entity_data={id:"minecraft:glow_item_frame",Invisible:1b}] 1
  • Once you place the frame and put an item in it, only the item shows; the frame border is hidden.
  • If the frame is empty, it remains faintly visible so you can see where you placed it.

2. Legacy Java Syntax (Minecraft 1.16 through 1.20.4)

If you are playing on older versions such as 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.4, or 1.20.4, use the traditional EntityTag NBT compound syntax:

# Minecraft 1.16 - 1.20.4 Legacy Syntax:
/give @p item_frame{EntityTag:{Invisible:1b}} 1

# Legacy Glow Item Frame:
/give @p glow_item_frame{EntityTag:{Invisible:1b}} 1

3. How to Turn Existing Placed Item Frames Invisible

To make frames you have already placed invisible without breaking them, stand next to the frame and run one of these commands:

# Make the nearest item frame invisible:
/execute as @e[type=item_frame,sort=nearest,limit=1] run data merge entity @s {Invisible:1b}

# Make ALL item frames in a 5-block radius invisible:
/execute as @e[type=item_frame,distance=..5] run data merge entity @s {Invisible:1b}

4. Invisible Item Frames in Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Bedrock Edition's /give command can't set NBT tags, so the Java commands above don't work there without external NBT editors or behavior packs.

On Bedrock you can use a resource pack that replaces the item frame texture with a transparent one. If Bedrock players join a Java server through GeyserMC and Floodgate, invisible frames set on the Java side are translated for them by Geyser.
