How are we so cheap?

Why our 24/7 free tier and low-cost quota upgrades sound too good to be true, and how house-hosted hardware pays for them.

1. Older desktop hardware

Intel i5 4th & 6th Gen · RAM

Many hosts lease new enterprise servers and pass that cost on. We use older desktop processors, Intel Core i5 4th and 6th Gen (for example the i5-4570 and i5-6500), with DDR3/DDR4 RAM and SSDs.

These CPUs have good single-thread speed, which is what Minecraft and Rust servers, Discord bots and web apps lean on, and they cost far less than server hardware.

Good single-core speed for a lower hardware cost

2. Self-hosted in our homes

No datacenter rent

We don't rent datacenter racks or resold cloud servers. We buy the hardware outright and run it in our own homes.

Once a machine is bought, our ongoing cost to run it is close to $0, with no monthly server rent.

Hosted at home: no monthly server leases

A 24/7 free tier and cost-price quota

World archives and backups live on Cloudflare R2, which charges nothing for egress. Traditional S3-style storage would make every wake-up and restore cost money. With R2, hibernation round-trips are effectively free, so we can offer them on the free tier without blinking.

When your project grows, you add RAM, CPU and disk one unit at a time at low per-unit prices instead of buying a bigger package.

Lower prices, still running 24/7

Inactive free servers are archived to S3

Checked before anything moves, with zero data loss

To free up node capacity without shutting off active servers, Enzica, our AI assistant, reviews idle free-tier servers. When a server has had no players or connections for a while, it checks the system metrics to confirm the server is really inactive.

Once it is confirmed inactive, the container's RAM and CPU are released and the full server directory is archived to S3 storage. When you come back, you can restore the server onto an active node in one click or download your files at any time.

Capped over-allocation (max ~60%)

Headroom limits on every node

To keep a 24/7 free tier without forcing paid subscriptions, we over-allocate resources by at most about 60%. Most hosted servers never use all of their assigned RAM and CPU at the same time, so the hardware stays busy without running out.

Memory and node load are monitored in real time to prevent lag spikes. When a node gets close to full, new servers are placed on other nodes.
