How Much RAM Does a Minecraft Server Need? Sizing Guide for Vanilla, Plugins and Modpacks
A practical guide to choosing RAM for a Minecraft server: what uses memory, sensible starting points for vanilla, plugin and modpack servers, and how to tell when you actually need more.
In this guide
1. What uses memory on a Minecraft server
• Loaded chunks: every player keeps the chunks around them loaded, so view distance and simulation distance matter more than the raw player count. • Entities: mobs, item drops, villagers and farms all live in memory. • Mods and plugins: each adds code and data; large modpacks add a lot. • The Java heap itself: the JVM needs headroom for garbage collection, so a server that is 100% full will stutter.
2. Sensible starting points
These are rules of thumb, not guarantees. Your world, settings and players change the picture.
• Vanilla or Paper, a few friends: 2 to 4 GB. • Paper or Purpur with a handful of plugins and up to around 20 players: 4 to 6 GB. • Light Fabric or Forge modpacks: 6 to 8 GB. • Large kitchen-sink modpacks (hundreds of mods): 8 to 12 GB or more.
For modpacks, the pack's own page usually lists a recommended server RAM. Start there.
- More RAM does not fix a slow CPU. If TPS drops while memory is fine, look at CPU usage, farms and entity counts first.
3. How to tell when you need more
Watch the panel's memory graph while players are online. Memory that climbs to the limit and stays there, long garbage collection pauses, or out-of-memory crashes in the console are signs you need more RAM. Lag with plenty of free memory points to CPU, view distance or a specific farm instead.
Run /spark profiler (from the spark plugin or mod) to see what is actually using time and memory before you upgrade.
# server.properties: lower these first if memory is tight
view-distance=8
simulation-distance=64. Matching it to a plan
Enzonic's free tier gives you 3.5 GB RAM, which suits vanilla, Paper and light plugin servers. Paid plans go from 4 GB (Wood) to 16 GB (Obsidian). See https://enzonic.com/pricing.
