How to play dreidel
Everyone puts a coin in the pot, then takes turns spinning. The letter facing up decides:
- נNun Nothing happens.
- גGimel Take the whole pot.
- הHei Take half the pot.
- שShin Put one coin in.
Together the letters stand for “Nes gadol hayah sham”: a great miracle happened there.

The festival of lights
Hanukkah remembers the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem and the small jar of oil that burned for eight days. Each evening families light the menorah, one candle more each night, using the raised shamash, the helper candle, to light the others.
It is a time for sufganiyot (jam doughnuts), latkes fried in oil, chocolate coins called gelt, and games of dreidel.
